[tweetmeme]With warm, sunny weather approaching, children of all ages are looking forward to endless days of bike rides, beach walks, and poolside fun. Take advantage of this opportunity to teach your students how to enjoy a great, safe summer!

Send students home with these important health and safety lessons, and invite them to share what they have learned with their friends and families.

Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen is the most important thing a person can do to protect his or her skin during the summer (and year-round). Any sunburn further increases your risk for developing skin cancer! Before students make plans to soak up as much sun as they can this summer, make sure they see this excellent video, explaining how to apply sunscreen – and when to re-apply!

Want to take a deeper look at how effective sunscreen is at blocking harmful UV rays? Share the results of this sunscreen experiment with your students.

Swimming

The draw of pools, lakes, oceans, and rivers is irresistible as the mercury climbs higher and higher. Be safe and be aware whenever you approach a body of water, especially if it is for the first time: even if you are a strong swimmer, water can hold dangerous surprises.

KidsHealth.org has very informative sites on water safety geared towards rambunctious adolescents and curious youngsters.

Outdoor Adventures

Whenever children go exploring, whether it is in their backyard or the backwoods, safety is a priority. These safety tips from the US Forest Service will prepare kids and families for every excursion, from picnics to backpacking trips!

Ready to explore, but not sure where to go? For a guided introduction to United States National Parks, check out this course from Curriki: Recreational and Wilderness Lands.

First Aid

Even the safest summer will include some burns, scrapes and sprains. Learn what First Aid supplies are needed for a well-stocked First Aid Kit at home with this First Aid Lesson from the Educators Reference Desk. After students prepare a First Aid Kit for their homes, parents can refer to the Mayo Clinic’s First Aid Index for treatment advice.

Do you have an instructional unit that you’re proud of and that you’d like to publish and get paid for? Learn more about Curriki’s Summer of Content Awards and apply today!

Application deadline is June 25th.

Have a fun, safe summer!
